As followers of Jesus, we are sent into the world to continue his mission and to be his witnesses. His mission is to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim the release of the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed free, and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. (see Luke 4:18) Our witness is a combination of both our words and actions. If our words and our actions don't line up our witness is inauthentic. Our lives bear witness to what we believe about Jesus. And our task is to witness to what we have seen and experienced first hand.
Henry Blackaby says, "our gospel is cancelled by the way we live." Brennan Manning says, "the greatest cause of atheism is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips then walk out the door and deny him with their lifestyle."
It is so important that we consider how our actions bear witness to what we know of Jesus and have experienced of his power in our lives. Is what I am doing showing others the awesome power and love of God? Or am I doing something that is inconsistent to the mission of Jesus? Can others see Jesus in my life... if so, my witness is authentic. If not, then my witness is inauthentic.
This is important and tough stuff... and sometimes we get caught up in things that we don't give much thought to and before you know it we are witnessing in a way that others can't see Jesus in us!
