God's love for outsiders....

Today's reading was from the book of Ruth in the Old Testament. In it is a story of love and survival. Ruth is a foreigner... an outsider, yet through her redemption by the Kinsman Redeemer, Boaz, she becomes an insider and has a fast track to being part of the lineage of Jesus! She is the great grandmother of King David!

I think it is interesting how God draws outsiders in... how God loves and reaches out to people who are on the margins. The whole story of God's love for the world is about a love that is as strong for those on the margins and perceived to be outsiders as it is for those perceived to be on the inside!

Certainly Jesus picked up that love... when he announced his mission in Luke 4:18, he said.... quoting from Isaiah... "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me for he has appointed me to preach Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the downtrodden will be freed from their oppressors, and that the time of the Lord's favor has come."

And certainly, Jesus' ministry constantly reached out to those on the margins!

Can we do no less????
