As I sit here in the warmth of my studio... with outside temperatures below 20 degrees, I am so grateful that I am part of a church that is one of many who are opening their facilities for the cold winter months to the homeless men of Salisbury! Last year was the first we were able to host the shelter, since it was the first we had a building. Last year we hosted a week. This year we will host for two weeks. There are about 10 or so churches that are participating in this city wide effort and so far it is going smoothly.
We will host the guys February 14-28 and will be joined by three other churches assisting us with our site and another church will run a second site to hold the other half of the guys. The goal of the program is to keep people from dying on the streets. We will show them God's love in many ways... by hosting them in a warm environment, giving them a hot supper, cooked breakfast and bag lunch for the day. They are in our facility from 5 p.m. until 7 a.m.
It is so wonderful to be part of a church that is eager to serve and steps up to the plate well! This ministry pushes some people out of their comfort zones, but they do it anyway! So awesome!
I am also thankful that another group in Salisbury is operating a shelter for women and children!
I pray that one day we will be able to do more than a cold weather shelter, but for now I am grateful that we are doing that!
